What is Indian Navy?

The Indian Navy is the maritime branch of the Indian Armed Forces, responsible for safeguarding India's maritime interests, protecting its vast coastline and island territories, and projecting India's influence in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond. It is one of the three services of the Indian Armed Forces.

Historical Background

Its origins trace back to the East India Company's Marine in 1612. It was later known as the Royal Indian Navy. After India's independence in 1947, it was reconstituted as the Indian Navy on January 26, 1950. It played crucial roles in the 1961 Goa Liberation, 1965 Indo-Pak War, and especially the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
