The Code on Social Security, 2020 is one of the four labor codes enacted by the Indian government to consolidate and amend laws relating to social security for all employees and workers. It aims to universalize social security benefits and extend them to the unorganized sector, including gig and platform workers.

Prior to 2020, India had a multitude of complex and fragmented labor laws. The government initiated comprehensive labor reforms to simplify 44 central labor laws into four broad codes. The Code on Social Security, 2020 replaced nine existing laws, including the Employees' Provident Funds Act, 1952; the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948; and the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, among others.

    Portability: Aims to ensure portability of social security benefits for migrant workers.

    Central Fund: Proposes the establishment of a Social Security Fund for unorganized workers, gig workers, and platform workers, funded by contributions from the Central Government, State Governments, and aggregators.
