What is International Relations / Diplomacy?

International Relations (IR) is the academic and public policy field that studies the relationships and interactions between states and other actors in the international system, including international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and multinational corporations. Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of states or other entities, typically in pursuit of foreign policy objectives.

Diplomacy has existed for millennia, evolving from ad-hoc envoys to permanent diplomatic missions (e.g., Congress of Vienna 1815). Post-WWII saw the rise of multilateral diplomacy and international institutions like the UN.
